It is said that a resume is the first impression which you impose in front of a recruiter and a key highlighted point in a resume decides your possibilities for the next level. The Summary of Qualifications and Core Competencies sections of resumes, biographies, curricula vitae, online profiles and other career marketing documents play distinctly different roles in marketing your skills. The Summary of Qualifications is a section used to present your soft skills to an employer. It is sometimes referred to as the Objective or Summary. On the other hand, Core Competencies is a list of industry-standard buzzwords for your profession and career level.
Summary of Qualifications
Your qualifications summary is like the jingle for a commercial. It distinguishes you from other candidates and sticks in the mind of the person who’s sorting through the applicants. Make it short and powerful. It should be only 4-5 sentences and packed with soft skills.
If you were a hiring manager, which of the following statements would make you stop and take notice?
1) Seeking position that will allow me to use my skills in any position for which I’m qualified.
2) Highly qualified professional with a 10-year background and a wealth of knowledge in distributed database management, pursuing career advancement with a global-minded organization.
The second choice is much more attention-getting than the first. It’s also readable, using common language and industry buzzwords — a key to optimizing your resume for online job search. Followed by some more statements that discuss soft skills and experience, this is the beginning of a great Summary of Qualifications.
Core Competencies
What are the major buzzwords or keywords in your industry that hiring managers will notice? It’s important to take notice of these words and phrases when you’re at work. Write them down as they change with time. When you write a list of Core Competencies, you’ll want to include about 10. They are the words the hiring managers are looking for when they search the database of resumes submitted for a position.
A list of Core Competencies for a logistics professional might include the following hard skills: 3PL Management, Green Logistics, Warehousing, Global Distribution, Team Leadership, Internal/External Communication, Supply Chain Management and 6 Sigma Certified. An Internet search of your industry’s buzzwords should give you a general understanding of what should be listed. It’s also a good idea to include any requirements listed in a job vacancy.
Make the Sections Work for You
Use the right kind of statements in your Summary of Qualifications, backed up with a strong list of keywords in your Core Competencies. This makes your qualifications easily identifiable to employers and recruiters. Don’t overuse words. Instead, make sure you fit as many key phrases and buzzwords into these sections on your resume, without making the document difficult to read. If you run out of ideas, search online resumes of people in your industry or check job descriptions.
Increase Your Exposure and Get the Interview
If your resume doesn’t contain the right language, you are going to be overlooked time and time again. To increase your odds, make sure you use the right terminology in your resume and use sections in a manner that reflects the current norm.
